Google Business Profile Categories: How to Pick the Right One

If you change one thing on your Google Business Profile this month, make it your category. Google uses your primary category as a top signal for which searches you show up in at all — get it wrong and even a perfect profile stays invisible.

Primary vs. secondary categories

Your primary category should describe your core business as specifically as possible. Your secondary categories capture the other things you do. A cafe that also serves lunch might use "Cafe" as primary and add "Breakfast restaurant" and "Sandwich shop" as secondary.

Be specific, not broad

Specific categories win. "Italian restaurant" ranks for far more relevant searches than a generic "Restaurant". "Emergency plumber" reaches urgent searchers that "Contractor" never will. Pick the tightest category that genuinely fits.

The competitor method (copy what's working)

The fastest way to find the right category: look at who already ranks in the top 3 for your main search.

  • Search your main keyword (e.g. "italian restaurant near me") on Google Maps.
  • Open the top-ranking competitors' profiles and note their categories.
  • If they all share a primary category you're not using, that's a strong hint.

Don't category-stuff

Only add categories that truly apply. Irrelevant categories confuse Google and can hurt you — and adding "Plumber" to a bakery won't magically win plumbing searches. Accuracy beats quantity, which is exactly what Google's guidelines ask for.
