How the local rank tracker works
Google ranks map results partly by distance, so your position depends on where the person searching is standing. One search from your own address cannot show that. A grid of searches can.
- 01
Pick a keyword
Use the words your customers type, such as “plumber near me” or “coffee shop”.
- 02
RankLocal searches from 25 points
A 5 by 5 grid around your business, each point 1.5 km from the next.
- 03
Your position at each point
It records where you appear in the top 20 results, and who ranks above you.
- 04
Every week, on its own
On Pro the scan repeats weekly, so you can see your rank move as you work on your profile.
What the rank map shows you
Each square is one point on the map, coloured by your position there. Green is the 3-pack, amber is positions 4 to 10, red is lower.
- Your average position across all 25 points.
- How many points put you in the Google 3-pack.
- The businesses ranked above you at each point, with their rating and number of reviews.
- How your rank changed since the last scan.
Free rank checker, free plan or Pro
All three use the same 25-point scan. Pro is the one that keeps tracking without you.

Improve the rank you are tracking
Tracking shows the problem. Reviews, a complete profile and regular posts are what move it, and RankLocal does those too.
Local rank tracker questions
What is a local rank tracker?
A local rank tracker checks where your business appears on Google Maps for a search, from many points around your area instead of one. Your rank changes with where the person searching is standing, so one check at your own address hides the streets where you lose customers.
How does RankLocal track Google Maps rankings?
It searches your keyword from 25 points on a 5 by 5 grid around your business, 1.5 km apart. At each point it records your position in the top 20 results and the businesses ranked above you.
How often are my rankings checked?
On Pro, RankLocal rescans your keyword every week on its own, so you can see the trend without doing anything. The free plan includes 3 rank map scans a week that you start yourself.
Is there a free Google Maps rank checker?
Yes. The free Google Maps rank checker runs the same 25-point scan for one keyword. The rank tracker adds the weekly rescans, the history and the competitor benchmark.
Why is my Google Maps rank different in different places?
Distance is one of the three things Google uses to rank local results, with relevance and prominence. A business can be first next to its door and off the list two kilometres away. That is why a rank map checks many points, not one.
How much does the local rank tracker cost?
The rank tracker is part of Pro, which is $19 a month, and the first month costs $1. The free plan includes 3 rank map scans a week.
