The 12 Best Free Local SEO Tools in 2026 (No Trials, No Catch)

Most "best free SEO tools" lists are really lists of paid tools with a 7-day trial attached. This one isn't. Every tool below is genuinely free to use, with no credit card and no countdown, and I've grouped them in the order a local business actually needs them.

Three of them are ours, and I've said so clearly each time. The other nine are Google's own tools and other free platforms that cost us nothing to recommend and would help you whether RankLocal existed or not.

Start here: the two that matter most

1. Google Business Profile

Free, official, and the single most important asset a local business has. Your profile is what appears in Google Maps and the local pack, and roughly everything else on this list exists to support it. If you haven't claimed and verified yours, nothing else here matters yet — see how to verify a Google Business Profile.

Use it for: your categories, services, hours, photos, posts, and replying to reviews.

2. Google Search Console

Also free and official. It shows the actual search queries bringing people to your website, how many impressions and clicks each one gets, and where you rank for them. It's the only place you get real query data straight from Google rather than a third-party estimate.

Use it for: finding the searches you already rank for on page two, which are usually the fastest wins.

Check where you actually stand

3. Google Business Profile Grader (ours)

Scores any Google Business Profile from 0 to 100 across the real ranking signals — reviews, rating, review recency, photos, categories, description, attributes, hours — and tells you exactly which ones you're failing. No signup. Run your profile through it here.

Use it for: a specific to-do list instead of vague advice.

4. Local Rank Checker (ours)

Searching your own business from your own shop tells you almost nothing, because Google already knows where you are. This checks your Map Pack position from a grid of points across your service area and plots it on a heatmap, so you can see you're number one at your front door and invisible a mile away. Check your rank here, or read how to check local rankings properly.

Use it for: knowing your real coverage, not your flattering coverage.

5. Local SEO ROI Calculator (ours)

Does simple maths on your own numbers to show what moving into the top three could be worth per month and per year. It's a planning tool, not a promise — every figure comes from what you type in. Try it here.

Use it for: deciding how much local SEO is actually worth to you before you spend anything.

Find what people are searching for

6. Google Keyword Planner

Free inside a Google Ads account (you don't have to run ads). Shows search volumes and related terms, and you can filter by location, which is the part that matters locally. "Emergency plumber" and "plumber near me" are very different searches with very different volumes in your specific town.

Use it for: confirming which words your customers actually type before you build pages around them.

7. Google Trends

Free, and genuinely useful for seasonal local businesses. You can compare two search terms, filter to your country or region, and see when demand spikes — so a roofer knows when storm-damage searches climb, and a gym knows exactly how early the January rush starts.

Use it for: timing your posts, offers and content to when demand actually rises.

Cover the platforms beyond Google

8. Bing Places for Business

Free, takes about fifteen minutes, and almost nobody local bothers. Worth it for one reason that's grown a lot: Bing's index feeds Microsoft Copilot, so being listed there affects whether AI assistants know you exist.

Use it for: a second search engine and AI visibility, for one setup.

9. Apple Business Connect

Free, and it controls how you appear in Apple Maps and Siri. Every iPhone user asking Siri for directions is using this data. Most local businesses have never claimed their listing.

Use it for: the entire iPhone-using half of your local market.

Check the technical side of your website

10. PageSpeed Insights

Free from Google. Tells you how fast your site loads on mobile and what's slowing it down. This matters locally because most "near me" searches happen on a phone, often standing outside deciding where to go, and a slow site loses that person to whoever loads first.

Use it for: the specific fixes, not the score. Chasing a perfect 100 is a waste of time.

11. Google Analytics

Free. Shows what people do once they reach your site — which pages they land on, which ones they leave immediately, and whether anyone reaches your contact page.

Use it for: spotting the pages that get traffic but convert nobody.

12. Google Alerts

Free and old-fashioned, but still useful. Set an alert for your business name and you'll hear when you're mentioned somewhere new, which is often a chance to earn a link or catch a wrong listing of your name, address or phone number.

Use it for: catching mentions and bad citation data before they spread.

The order to actually use them in

If you did nothing else, this order gets you the most for the least effort:

  • Week one: claim and complete your Google Business Profile, then grade it to see what's missing.
  • Week two: check your real rank on a geo-grid so you have a baseline to measure against.
  • Week three: claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. One evening, done forever.
  • Ongoing: Search Console monthly to see which searches are climbing.

What free tools can't do

Being straight with you: free tools tell you what's wrong. They don't do the work. The businesses that climb are the ones that then reply to every review, post something weekly, and add photos regularly, month after month. That's the whole game, and it's boring, which is exactly why most competitors quit doing it.

If you want the full list of what to fix, the 2026 local SEO checklist covers all 23 items. And if keeping the routine going by hand is the part you know you'll drop, that's the specific problem RankLocal automates.
